On July 4th, 1910, a momentous fight took place between Jim Jefferies and Jack Johnson. This was the first fight of the century as an African-American boxing champion (Johnson) fought the great White Hope in Jefferies.

From 1899 to 1904, James Jefferies was the dominant heavyweight of his era but we don’t remember him for his career accomplishment but for his participation in one of the great sporting event of the 20th century; the Johnson-Jefferies championship bout of 1910.

Ali was serious about Islam and its teachings. He wasn’t trying to dodge a war as many reporters at that time would claim. As a matter of fact, when he had tried to apply a few years earlier he was declined because his test scores were a little low.

I read Russell’s book “Go for Glory”, and I found he was not a basketball player but an individual who played basketball. Russell gave America a lesson on what it was like to black in the 60’s and his book was as much a personal journey as a basketball story.
