Alcorn State's Corey Wimberly Leads 2005 All-SWAC Baseball Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Corey Wimberly, a sophomore second baseman from Jacksonsville, Florida, led selections to the 2005 Southwestern Athletic Conference All-Conference Baseball Team.

He was picked Player of the Year, and Most Outstanding Hitter. The All-SWAC Baseball team was selected by the conference's baseball coaches and sports information directors.
Wimberly, the SWAC Pre-Season Player of the Year, finished the regular season leading the NCAA in batting (.472), ranked second as the nation's toughest to strike out category and third in stolen bases (1.17 pg).
Prairie View A&M pitcher, Matthew Chase was named Newcomer of the Year and teammate Wrandal Taylor was tabbed Freshman of the Year. Defensive Player of the Year honors went to Southern's Brandon Revis and the Pitcher of the Year honors went to Texas Southern's Brandon Stricklen.
Jackson State led all teams with three players named to the first team, and Designated Hitter, followed by Southern (3) and Prairie View A&M (2) with Alcorn State, Miss. Valley State, Ark.-Pine Bluff and Texas Southern one each.
Wimberly and other All-SWAC players are in action at the 2005 SWAC "Baseball Blues & Bar-B-Q", Tournament May 19-22 in Birmingham, AL, at historic Rickwood Field action began on Thursday.
