Ali was serious about Islam and its teachings. He wasn’t trying to dodge a war as many reporters at that time would claim. As a matter of fact, when he had tried to apply a few years earlier he was declined because his test scores were a little low.

I read Russell’s book “Go for Glory”, and I found he was not a basketball player but an individual who played basketball. Russell gave America a lesson on what it was like to black in the 60’s and his book was as much a personal journey as a basketball story.

It's been almost 62 years since the Globetrotters topped the Minneapolis Lakers and their legendary big man, George Mikan. With only a few of the players still alive and just a handful of photographs remaining, the game has been largely lost to history.

He went from being the youngest of 17 in a family of sharecroppers, to racing for $8 a month and eventually, $1,000 a race. His racing stats show him winning back-to-back Kentucky Derbys (1901 on His Eminence, and 1902 on Alan-A-Dale). He was also the last Black jockey to win a Kentucky Derby.

The sport of horse racing was built with the talents of Blacks whose jobs typically included trainer, jockey, and owner. One extraordinary jockey in this history was named Isaac Burns Murphy. Murphy was born on May 7, 1861 in the Fayette County area of Kentucky.
